The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
