Fierce Gales Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to remain inside as strong winds strike the country.

Powerful gusts hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and led authorities to call off more than 100 flights, as reported by domestic outlets.

These gusts are affecting the whole South Island and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent high-level wind alerts - the most severe warning - in core zones including Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional electricity and network failures.

Extensive Damage and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting homes mostly in the South Island, though authorities report that energy was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have reported that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, and power lines and trees have been toppled by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services in and out of the urban area have been suspended because of the winds, whereas certain highways and community centers are shut down.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have declared a emergency situation, to assist recovery activities.

Work Stoppages Alongside Severe Conditions

The powerful gales on this day occur while tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been termed a "mega strike", calling for better pay and working conditions.

But the extreme weather has forced them to change certain arrangements, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the nearby nation, bringing a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have declared flame prohibitions for fear of forest fires.
