Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
