Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
