Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
An important official said the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
